Every lot in Sierra de Montserrat has a line on paper that visitors never notice: the Development Envelope. The house, the yard and the outdoor lighting all live inside it. Past it is conservation ground, some of it wetland, and that part stays dark. It’s the main thing to know about Sierra de Montserrat Christmas light hanging, and we plan around it. We’re a Loomis outfit ourselves, so this is the home crowd.

    Lights stay inside the envelope

The recorded Declaration for the Sierra de Montserrat Owners Association confines outdoor lighting to each lot’s Development Envelope. We read through it and found no clause about holiday decorations and no holiday dates. We did not find the association’s separate design guidelines or rules, so if your copy sets a window, go by that and tell us at (916) 675-8282. We’ll schedule the hanging and the January takedown to suit it.

In practice it means this. The roofline, the entry, the trees close to the house and the near end of the driveway are all fair places for lights. The trees out in the conservation area are not, however good they’d look. Cords, stakes and ladders stay inside the envelope with the house.

It’s a gated community, so we’ll need you to arrange entry on hanging day and again in January.

The drive from Montserrat Lane to your front door

Driveways here run from the road back to the building envelope, and on these large lots that can be a fair stretch. From Montserrat Lane or Rutherford Canyon Road, a passerby may see your house only as a glow set well back from the road.

That changes what’s worth lighting. Roofline lights on the highest front-facing ridge and gables carry the farthest. A lit wreath up high on a gable does the same job as a porch light seen across a field. Stake lighting helps most on the last stretch of driveway where it meets the house, and we set stakes off the pavement and clear of any sprinkler heads. Pillar wraps belong on entry columns or the posts at a private gate, where guests slow down anyway.

See how driveway and path stakes work, or read more on the Holiday Nights Christmas Lights Hanging home page. We also light acreage in Hidden Valley, just over the line in Granite Bay.

Sierra de Montserrat Christmas light hanging for a custom house

No two homes in here match. They’re custom builds, so the photos you text us, or send from the contact page, matter more than they would in a tract. We look at the roof material, the pitch, where the gables face and where you have outdoor outlets, and we give you a quote on that phone call.

Then we bring the lights and hang them with clips. Tile gets a clip that tucks under the tile, metal and composition roofs get their own kinds, and none of it involves nails, staples or holes in your trim. Tree wraps go on with soft ties, wound from the base up the trunk and out the first good limbs. Lit garland gets tied along an entry beam, a railing or an arch.

A timer runs the whole display. It comes on at dusk and shuts down for the night without you thinking about it.

    What the town says

We found no holiday light dates in the Town of Loomis outdoor lighting code. The code does limit how much light can land on a neighboring residential property, and it says permanently installed lighting can’t blink or flash. With this much room between houses, a steady seasonal display on a timer isn’t likely to bother anybody.

If you want to see what the rest of town is up to, a 2024 family list of local displays named King Road at Webb and three houses on Brace Road.

January, and how to reach us

Come January we drive back up, unclip the roof, unwind the trees and pull the stakes. Nothing stays behind on the house and nothing goes in your garage. If a strand fails before then, ring (916) 675-8282 and we’ll be back up the drive to sort it.

A few Sierra de Montserrat questions

Can you light the big trees at the edge of my lot?

Only if they stand inside your Development Envelope. The Declaration keeps outdoor lighting within the envelope, so trees in the conservation area stay unlit.

Does the Sierra de Montserrat Owners Association have holiday light dates?

The recorded Declaration we read has no holiday clause. We could not find the separate rules or design guidelines, so check your own copy and we’ll follow whatever it says.

My house is a long way up the driveway. What shows from the road?

High roofline runs and a wreath on a front gable carry the farthest. Stakes do the most good where the driveway reaches the house.

Sierra de Montserrat is gated. How does your truck get in?

You arrange entry for us twice, on hanging day and again in January when everything comes down.
