In Newcastle, a lot of homes get seen from a quarter mile off, through the oaks, over a pasture, or from a bend in a country road. One clean lit roofline carries that whole distance. That’s what sets Newcastle Christmas light hanging apart from doing a house down in the flats, and it’s why folks up this way call us. We work out of Loomis, just a few minutes down Taylor Road. How Lights Read From a Distance

Fine detail gets lost when the house is that far back. What carries is a clean, steady line: the eave, the peaks, a porch rail, maybe the fence along the drive. So we’d rather do the roofline right and add one or two strong accents than scatter little bits around the yard that nobody can make out from the road.

Warm white tends to look the way folks remember Christmas looking out here, though a barn in full color has its charm too.

Old Town and the Fruit Buildings

The old fruit-shipping buildings along the tracks still anchor Old Town Newcastle, and the houses on the winding streets above them go back a long way, some to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Those homes have steep little gables, deep porches and trim somebody took real care with. We don’t staple or nail into any of it. Everything goes up on plastic clips that hook onto the gutter edge or tuck beneath a shingle, and they come off without leaving a mark. On old wood, that matters a great deal. Chantry Hill sits above Old Town, and from up there a lit porch rail or a single outlined gable reads all the way down the hill.

If you run a shop or a restaurant down along Main Street, some garland and a pair of lit wreaths across the front read nicely from the road and don’t fight with the old siding.

Acreage Off Rattlesnake Road and Out Ophir Way

Cross I-80 and follow Rattlesnake Road south and the lots open right up. Horse property, dry pasture, a long gravel drive with a board fence running beside it. From the road, a lit fence turns into one glowing line that walks you straight up to the porch.

Out Ophir way, where orchards used to cover the hills, you’ll find older ranch houses mixed in with newer places set well back from the road. Along Ridge Road, big valley oaks and tall pines hide the houses until you’re in the driveway, so a wrapped oak by the turn-in is often the first thing anybody sees. Gold Hill, north of town, is a small, spread-out community strung along the road, and out there a lit gate is how anyone finds you after dark. Tell us what you can see from the road, or text us a picture from the mailbox, and we’ll plan around that view.

Newcastle Christmas Light Hanging, Roof to Gate

We run the gutter line and climb every peak. Asphalt shingle takes a clip slid beneath the tab, tile gets a clip shaped to hold its edge without lifting it, and metal barn roofs get their own method. Oaks wrap beautifully, trunk and the first big limbs, and that shape holds from far away. Tall pines we usually light only up to the first branches, and an old fruit tree near the drive is a sweet touch.

A tight spiral up each porch post or stone gate pillar frames the front of the house. On a long gravel drive, stakes go in clear of the sprinkler heads and drip line, spaced so they read as a gentle path, not an airport runway. A lit wreath can hang over the front door or on the ranch gate where you turn in, and lit garland suits a porch railing or a deck rail looking out over the valley. The lights are ours, and so is every trip up the ladder. For more on oaks and other trees, have a look at our tree wrapping page.

Power, Timers and the Long Run From the House

On a big lot the nearest outlet may sit a long way from the gate you want lit. We ask where your outdoor outlets are and which ones ride on a GFCI, then route power so no cord lies across a path where somebody catches a boot on it in the dark. A timer wakes everything up around sundown and turns it off when you like, so nobody walks out to the barn in the cold. If a strand quits mid-season, or a gusty night pulls a section loose, a call to (916) 675-8282 sends one of us back up the hill.

    We Come Back in January

Sometime in January, after the new year settles in, our crew drives back up and pulls every strand. Nothing sits up on the roof past January, and no tangled boxes pile up in the garage or the tack room.

    Up the Hill From Penryn

Our crews spend the season going back and forth between Loomis, Penryn and Auburn, and Newcastle sits right in the middle of that run. We light storefronts, churches and offices too. Phone (916) 675-8282 for a price while you’re on the line, or leave your details on our contact page, and one of us will ring you from the shop.
